ENVY - SEVEN DEADLY SIN
This piece is a sight to behold, and as you look at it, picture yourself as the woman in the skin-tight leopard, taking a photograph of her past-self. She yearns for the days long departed, when she was thinner, more popular and younger than she is now. Ah, but the face of Envy stares back into the camera, as she too, pines for what she can never grasp, for she covets the successes and outward appearances of her rivals. As this cycle continues, none can obtain salvation. The little clowns mock her, as she holds their strings, they hint that the joke is on her. The small grim reaper dauntingly symbolizes memento mori, for you cannot take it with you when you die, your looks, your fortune, your fame. It is cruel; as the saying goes, it rings true, ‘compare and despair’. The cross on the golden phone reminds the girl to look to God for fulfillment, but she’s only looking at her faded reflection, trapped in the past. She cannot see outside the lie that she is never enough.
