GLUTTONY - SEVEN DEADLY SIN

How much is enough? When you have everything you need in the palm of your manicured hand, why do you yearn for more? The central figure in this painting knows, and if you look into her eyes, she might reveal her secrets. She is perfect, she has reached the pinnacle of her beauty, fame, wealth and film career, and yet, the tangible concept of her personified perfection is unobtainable. The girls that bookend her presence know this, but they will continue to strive to emulate her status, the feeling of complete satisfaction. The girl on the left eats the donut looking directly at the viewer, her confidence growing daily as she consumes and regurgitates culture and ideas until they become distilled. As she reaches the peak of her power, underlings come to push her off her throne. She staggers for years, gaining and losing, and flutters down to perch, haggard and thinner, on the other side of the central figure. She exists now with less confidence, innocence and optimism. Her trials and tribulations through evil had made her soul jaded and turned her heart callous. She wanted it all but didn’t realize that to have everything is impossible. And even if you have it, maintaining the summit will be futile. We know there are dishes on the table with delights, but we are aware that they all have a limited shelf-life, and this is but a teardrop in the ocean of choices we have in regards to what we consume, and how much. Moderation, and being content in the present moment with gratitude is key. The figure of Jesus on the crucifix in the background reminds us that we will always be empty unless we fill ourselves completely with His Love.
