SEVEN VIRTUES
The Original Seven Virtues painting (not the print) stands five feet tall, by three feet, six inches wide. It is a masterpiece of dominance, for only the Virtues could directly combat the sins, a scale balancing good and evil, with the good canceling the latter out. The lightness of the gifts of Heaven can elevate the soul to the weightlessness of an angel’s feather.
Behold, the figurehead, a girl in a cowboy hat, a look of surrender in her eyes. She has given in to the presence of God in her life, relaxing under the cloak in peace and harmony with her ultimate salvation. She has acknowledged her sins, and repented. She has been forgiven. Below are the Virtues. You are invited to meditate on the ethereal beauty of the faces of the women, their symbols, and the direction they can point you on your path to eternal redemption in your present life.
1.
CHASTITY
Chastity holds a chalice, representing moderation in desires. To follow this Virtue, practice self control in eating, drinking, or spending. Develop a balanced schedule of work and rest, avoid excess and embrace simplicity. To be pure of heart is to be closer to God.
2.
TEMPERANCE
Temperance holds a mirror which represents self-awareness and reflection. Thoughtfully plan goals or projects, seek advice before making important decisions, and reflect on past experiences to improve future choices. This Virtue enables discernment, and with wisdom we will follow the guiding actions towards good.
3.
CHARITY
The profile of a woman with a sacred heart bleeding above her head embodies the Virtue of Charity. Donating time and resources to those in need, and performing acts of kindness and generosity will bring you close to God as you dwell in this Virtue of everlasting love.
4.
DILIGENCE
The Virtue of Diligence is paired with a lion embodying bravery and strength. Show fortitude by the following acts: face your fears, stand up for truth and faith, persevere through challenges in pursuit of a goal, and encourage other to remain steadfast in difficulties.
5.
FORGIVENESS
Forgiveness raises a scale in her hand, bringing balance and fairness in judgement. To follow this Virtue, volunteer for social rights causes, mediate disputes with impartiality, and defend the rights of the vulnerable. This Virtue is the cornerstone of justice, ensuring fairness and protection.
6.
KINDNESS
The Virtue of Kindness is represented by a girl with a glowing candle by her warm cheek, symbolizing divine guidance. You can practice faith by daily prayer and scripture reading, participating in worship and the sacraments, and trusting in God during trials. To have faith, you are connected to God and His Promises.
7.
HUMILITY
Humility holds a star, symbolizing guidance and aspiration. Hope inspires trust in God’s Plan and eternal life. Call on the Virtue of Humility when you are discouraged or in despair, set meaningful goals with trust in divine providence, and anticipate a blessed eternal life.
